Oaxacan Animals
The examples seen below were done by second grade students.
Students learn about a culture in another part of North America, and the idea that we are all part of North America. I introduce Oaxaca, Mexico and the arts and culture of the people there. I have a slide show to familiarize students with the habits of the people, clothing, architecture, and how the whole family can participate in the art that helps their families make a living. I also introduce the whole process from harvesting the wood to student discussion and sketching of the intricate and fun designs used by the Oaxacan community. In student art works I help students work to develop their own designs and symbols rather than copying others. We talk about patterns, rhythm and color active in this style of work and how we can appreciate another culture's ways.
